The finishing touches are being made to this year’s Doncaster Pride event which takes place this weekend at the Keepmoat Stadium.
by Newsdesk | 25th June 2013
For the third year the event is being held at The Keepmoat Stadium and is a celebration of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community and falls exactly 43 years after the first ever Gay Pride in New York on the 28th June 1970 a year to the day after the Stonewall Riots heralded the start of the gay rights movement. Today Pride events are more about celebration and less about demonstration, but of course there are still many people across the world persecuted or discriminated against because of their sexuality.
Doncaster Pride features a Main Stage from 1 pm to 9pm with a fantastic line up (see below) showcasing the best of local talent, tribute acts and finishing with The Voice finalist Sean Rumsey, X Factor Finalists Lloyd Daniels and Diva Fever and the sensational Katrina Leskanich (ex of Katrina and the Waves).
Add to the impressive Main Stage a Cabaret Tent line up and a Dance Tent, a market, family activities thanks to Doncaster Rovers Community Foundation, fairground rides and you have a fantastic, family friendly, fun day out.
There are also bars, a food court and plenty of colourful entertainment from crowd mingling stilt walkers!
“Pride isn’t just for the gay community, it’s about bringing people together in a friendly and happy party atmosphere” said Pride Chair Trevor Jones. “It really does have something for everyone and we encourage people to come and join in themselves the best party in Doncaster all year”.
Entry is £5 on the gate and 14 and under free.
The fun continues from 9pm at Crystal’s nightclub in the Market Place till 4am and entry to this is £3.
The Doncaster Pride Committee is also using this year’s event to announce the award of National Lottery funding of a brand new project worker to work in Doncaster schools to stamp out homophobia in our classrooms.
“Homophobic bullying in our schools remains at a level that is unacceptable. Young people are bullied on a daily basis because of their sexuality and suicide attempts by lesbian, gay and transgender teen’s accounts for a massive 30% of all suicide attempts across the country and across all ages…. This should not happen in a civilised country in the 21st century” said Trevor Jones
“Doncaster Pride is delighted to announce a new project, funded by The National Lottery where we will be recruiting a project worker to go into our schools to help those suffering, but moreover will work to educate the perpetrators of the bullying and make a difference. Forty four years ago the gay community made a stand and the world listened….. Today Doncaster makes a stand – youth homophobia you are not welcome here!”
