Candle In The Wind singer and openly gay, father of two, Sir Elton John has announced plans that he is to perform a concert in Moscow this December, saying,
‘As a gay man, I can’t leave those people on their own without going over there and supporting them. ‘
Speaking to the Guardian this week Elton John explained how he felt obligated to go to Russia in December, saying that he needed to think ‘very carefully’ about what he was going to say.
Speaking candidly about how his sexuality has affected his touring career Sir Elton said,
‘There’s two avenues of thought: do you stop everyone going, ban all the artists coming in from Russia?
‘But then you’re really leaving the men and women who are gay and suffering under the anti-gay laws in an isolated situation.
‘I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’ve got to go.’
In the past Sir Elton has faced death threats from an Islamic group when he played in Morocco, a church in Tobago there organised a protest against his appearance and he was banned from playing in front of the Pyramids of Giza because of his sexuality.
Last week Believe singer Cher spoke about how she was asked to make an appearance at the Sochi games, however declined citing the anti-gay laws as her reasoning.
