Russian MP Alexei Zhuravlev has withdrawn his anti-gay parenting bill which could see LGBT parents lose their parental rights over their own children.

Alexei Zhuravlev, who tabled an anti-gay parenting law has ‘withdrawn’ his bill, which could see 1000s of LGBT parents in Russia lose their parental rights over their own children.
The bill was proposed last month.
During an interview Zhuravlev said:
‘It occurred to me that since we have a law explicitly prohibiting the promotion of homosexuality among minors, the Family Code should be amended in such a way that that if a husband or a wife professes a non-traditional sexual orientation, they should be deprived of their parental rights. The purpose of this would be to restrict the influence of such a person on his or her own children.’
However, don’t celebrate yet, as a spokeswoman for the Russian MP said, that the bill was being ‘recalled for revision’
She said:
“Certain legal formulations will be clarified, and then after some points are removed, it will be brought to the State Duma again. We hope to pass the bill.”
Russian LGBT activists have suggested that this ‘recall’ might be seen as an effort to make the Russian Government look more favourable as the Sochi Winter Olympics draws near, and the spotlight on Russia’s staunchly anti-gay agenda is under the watchful eye of the world’s media.
Last week the UK’s Government ruled out a political boycott of the Russian Winter Olympics in Sochi, saying:
‘We share concerns about changes to the law in Russia prohibiting the promotion of “non-traditional sexual relations” to minors. In effect, the law could prevent the LGBT community in Russia from fully enjoying the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. The Prime Minister set out these concerns with President Putin in a meeting in St Petersburg on 6 September, making clear the strength of feeling in the UK and that it was in Russia’s interests to tackle discrimination.’
