The Transgender Rights Organizer will work in collaboration with transgender and allied individuals and organizations throughout the state to establish a network of transgender or allied activists interested in forwarding transgender equality in Pennsylvania. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in grassroots field organizing, including volunteer recruitment and coalition building. This position is based in Pennsylvania, with Central Pennsylvania/Harrisburg preferred, and reports to Deputy Executive Director.

The Position

Specifically, the Pennsylvania Transgender Rights Organizer will:

  • Establish a network of existing and new transgender and allied activists and supporters throughout the state to advocate and educate on the range of issues affecting transgender people
  • Facilitate activities and identify opportunities that build the capacity of transgender and allied people to engage in organizing and policy advocacy on behalf of transgender rights and economic justice
  • Engage diverse communities in organizing efforts, including youth/students, communities of color, and communities of faith
  • Collect stories of transgender Pennsylvanians
  • Work with partner organizations interested in advancing LGBT equality specifically with regard to non-discrimination

Candidate Profile

We seek an enthusiastic self-starter with high energy, a “can do” attitude, and a knowledge of and commitment to social justice. The candidate must be comfortable working independently. This person must be flexible, adaptable, resourceful, and creative.

This person will be capable of taking responsibility for specific goals and measurable outcomes within designated time frames and will be able to coordinate multi-task initiatives to successful conclusion.

The successful candidate will have significant field organizing experience around issues or candidates, including experience working within communities of color and faith communities.

The successful candidate will have exceptional “people skills” that will be used to work effectively with colleagues, partner organizations, and volunteers.

Qualified individuals will ideally bring two to three years of progressively responsible experience in grassroots organizing. Candidates will also have the ability to maintain flexible work hours including weekends and evening hours plus in-state travel 5 to 10 days a month.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Cultural competency in working in and with transgender communities and, in particular, transgender communities of color
  • Community organizing, education and/or policy advocacy experience (in a paid or volunteer position)
  • Basic understanding of employment, health, housing, jails/prisons and other areas in which transgender people experience discrimination
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write clearly, speak in public, and facilitate large and small meetings
  • Ability to work without close supervision on both assigned and self-initiated tasks
  • Commitment to a multi-disciplinary approach to social change
  • Experience using standard office technology

Preferred Skills and Abilities

  • Experience working with a group to plan and implement social change strategies to address a pressing problem of systemic discrimination, isolation, and/or oppression.
  • Education or work experience in public policy, transgender education and outreach, community organizing, community health, or related field.

Compensation

Salary based on experience. Benefit package available. This position is currently funded for 12 months.
