The National Center for Lesbian Rights seeks a skilled Communications Manager who is highly adept at media relations and utilizing social networks to shape public discourse. Specifically, the Communications Manager is responsible for media relations and communications for several organizational projects, including the Immigration Project, Family Law Project, Sports Project, Legislative and Policy projects, and the Youth Project.
The Communications Manager will be responsible for raising the visibility of these project areas, including developing relationships with reporters who cover the project areas, finding opportunities to place project directors in key media outlets, drafting and distributing press releases, content management of NCLR’s website, advertising, assisting with newsletter and list serve content, and the production of NCLR publications. The Communications Manager reports to the Director of Communications and works together with NCLR’s program and development teams.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL:
- Have at least three years experience working in communications either in-house or with a firm;
- Be devoted to achieving LGBT equality;
- Have a can-do attitude, and the willingness to deliver top-notch work.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work closely with the Director of Communications, the Digital Marketing and Design Manager, and project leadership to develop strategic communications plans, including traditional, LGBT, and virtual media for assigned areas.
- Develop comprehensive communications plans—including messaging, media training, placement strategy, and social networking campaigns—that elevate NCLR’s work.
- Plan, write, and edit materials including press releases, action alerts, letters to media professionals, ghost written and bylined op-eds and any other materials as needed.
- Maintain, initiate, and cultivate relationships with media contacts on a regional and national level to encourage on-going coverage of NCLR cases, advocacy, and events.
- Maintain website content, including updating content and implementing strategy for making it as user-friendly, relevant, and effective for public education as possible.
- Organize regular journalist briefings and editorial board meetings on LGBT legal issues as well as other NCLR program areas.
- Monitor coverage of NCLR placements and compile lists on a monthly basis for distribution to key stakeholders.
- Work in partnership with communications staff of other partner organizations and coalitions as needed.
- Assist in the production and distribution of NCLR’s legal publications.
- Manage other communications staff, including communications interns.
