The Development Officer will be responsible for the coordination and successful implementation of fundraising events including our annual gala in New York City and events around the country and sometimes abroad. Reporting to the Director of Development & External Relations, the position works closely with staff across the organization to manage individual donor relationships at both high-value and grassroots levels. The Development Officer is a key part of the Development department and must demonstrate initiative at all stages of the partnership cycle including cultivating and growing existing sponsors, identifying new sponsorship prospects, and managing effective delivery. The position represents IGLHRC to external audiences interested in supporting the organization and maintains ongoing relationships with individual donors and sponsors at all stages of the giving cycle.

Founded in 1990 and guided by the values of collaboration, depth and feminism, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) strives to help lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people live safer, healthier, and more empowered lives worldwide. IGLHRC focuses its efforts on supporting organizations to effectively document human rights violations and advocate for the rights of LGBT people. IGLHRC’s vision of change includes policy reform, legal challenges, increased coalition work, and stronger LGBT communities worldwide.

Responsibilities 

IGLHRC produces an annual gala event in New York City, Celebration of Courage , and a number of smaller events in cities around the US plus London. In 2015, the year of our 25 th anniversary, IGLHRC will be increasing both the number and scale of events. The Development Officer will be expected to travel occasionally.  Special Events Coordination 
  • Research and track prospective event sponsors
  • Achieve fundraising goals for events in partnership with Director of Development & External Relations
  • In conjunction with team, recruit corporate sponsors to achieve growth targets
  • Develop a marketing and publicity plan to promote the event
  • Secure in-kind donations for day of event (i.e. food, beverage, spirits, transportation, accommodations, entertainment, giveaways, gift bags, etc.)
  • Year round preparation for event and execution of logistics (i.e. budget management, day of event planning and execution, vendor management, permit processing, insurance requests, etc.)
  • Research event venues as needed
  • Work with Communications Department to produce all event materials, including save the dates, invitations, e-blasts, signs and other printed materials as needed
  • Work with Communications Department on event-related media outreach
  • Work with printer(s) to ensure timely production, delivery and distribution of event materials including save the dates and invitations and other event related solicitations
  • Oversee recruitment and management of event volunteers
  • Coordinate all aspects of event vendor relations including researching of vendors; getting quotes; coordinating contracts as directed by Director of Development & External Relations; processing of vendor invoices; coordination of time efficient delivery of services; and tracking of invoicing
  • Work with board members and organizational supporters to establish host committees and engage the host committee in outreach

Individual Donor Cultivation 

  • Develop and implement IGLHRC’s individual donor strategy
  • Manage pipeline of individual donors, including past donors, those we are currently cultivating, and future prospects
  • Develop and execute an effective grassroots fundraising strategy
  • Develop quarterly and annual reports for individual donors, and other collateral needed for individual fundraising in collaboration with the team in Development and the Communications Department
  • Coordinate engagement of donors and prospects in program opportunities, including mentorship, advisory boards, speaking opportunities, and more

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Minimum of two years of experience in creating and implementing successful individual donor strategies at high-value and grassroots levels.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in special events fundraising
  • Excellent organizational, management, writing, and proofreading skills
  • Creative thinker and someone who is comfortable prospecting, cultivating and managing individual donor relationships at high-value and grassroots levels.
  • Knowledge of the corporate philanthropic community
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently, and also as a dependable team player.
  • Experience working with high-net worth individuals
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, knowledge of Google Docs, and knowledge of Databases, ideally Salesforce CRM.
  • Strong problem solving and decision making skills
  • Preferred knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, and other social media outlets as tools for individual donor cultivation and event promotion.
