The Trevor Project is looking to hire a full-time Sr. Government Affairs Manager into our Washington, D.C. office.

Founded in 1998 by the creators of the Academy Award®-winning short film TREVOR, The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) young people ages 13-24.

Sr. Government Affairs & Policy Manager

The Sr. Government Affairs & Policy Manager is primarily responsible for managing and leading The Trevor Project’s Government Affairs department. The Sr. Manager is the The Trevor Project’s point person in our nation’s capital with policy leaders in the LGBT movement, the mental health and suicide prevention field, Members of Congress, the White House, and in federal agencies such as the Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and Justice to advance The Trevor Project’s policy goals.

This Sr. Manager will coordinate and lead The Trevor Project’s advocacy and public policy priorities, focusing on federal legislation, administration policy, and regulatory changes that support LGBTQ youth and mental health in this country. The Sr. Government Affairs & Policy Manager will forge partnerships with key government agencies, providing leadership around government funding opportunities. The Sr. manager will also participate, as appropriate, in partnerships to advance relevant state legislation and policies.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned at the discretion of the Supervisor)

  • Establish and strengthen working relationships with relevant elected officials, legislative staff and agency staff at the federal level and, in some cases, at the state level.
  • Develop and maintain relations with government agencies to ensure early identification of funding opportunities.
  • Hire, supervise and manage all Government Affairs department staff, if any, fellows, and interns.
  • Lead the Public Policy & Advocacy committee of The Trevor Project Board of Directors.
  • Craft and drive federal, and selected state, legislative and regulatory strategies and plans related to The Trevor Project’s growing and evolving policy priorities.
  • Develop a leadership role in key national coalitions and other policy-making bodies in Washington, D.C. relevant to the LGBT community, youth, and mental health.
  • Coordinate with partner organizations at the federal and state level to advocate for legislative and policy change to advance the health and well-being of LGBTQ youth.
  • Monitor activities among the Executive Branch and in Congress that could impact LGBTQ youth.
  • Prepare and submit presentations, testimony, and other official materials to relevant decision-makers that advance The Trevor Project’s policy priorities.
  • Direct Trevor’s Advocacy Alert program.
  • Work with The Trevor Project’s Communications and Marketing teams to effectively articulate Trevor’s advocacy and policy work through print and online materials as well as advocacy communications to constituents.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job.
  • Law Degree desirable, but not required
  • Min. 3-5 years professional experience in advocacy related to health, LGBT issues, and/or youth;
  • Experience in federal public policy and federal funding stream analysis, lobbying and/or government affairs work;
  • Track record of success in creating and managing policy initiatives;
  • Strong leadership skills;
  • Must have excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple high-priority projects simultaneously;
  • Demonstrated experience working in a multicultural environment where commitment to diversity based on race, ethnic origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, and physical ability is an important institutional value.

Supervisory Responsibilities : This position has primary supervisory responsibility for any future Government Affairs staff, fellows, and interns. This employee will conduct appropriate candidate searches and interviews for open positions within the department.
