The Membership Outreach program seeks to expand and diversify HRC’s membership base through community events, membership recruitment at pride festivals, athlete fundraising, gift memberships and the Wedding Registry. The Deputy Director, Membership Outreach is an experienced manager of staff, programs and budget. This position directly engages in all program elements and manages the staff team that executes these programs. The Deputy Director serves as the most senior point person for the 60+ Membership Outreach volunteers nationwide who are supported by the staff team. Volunteers carry out year-long goals to recruit members and fundraise through pride and community events.
On an annual basis, the combined Membership Outreach programs recruit 30,000+ members, 50,000 supporters and raises $1.3 million. Despite their differences, all programs educate and engage the public on HRC’s resources and importance of membership.
Deputy Director Membership Outreach HRC
The Deputy Director works in partnership with the Director and staff team to develop the overall strategy for the comprehensive programs as well as manage its day-to-day implementation.
Develop, manage and report on $1.3 million annual budget and associated work plans. Provide regular and comprehensive program budget analysis and organizational membership growth updates.
Hire, manage and mentor staff team. Conduct annual performance reviews. Provide strategic leadership and direction for staff and guide them in their relationships with volunteers.
Work collaboratively, diplomatically and efficiently across departments within HRC and represent the organization externally. Strong interpersonal skills a must.
Motivate and lead Board members and volunteers nationwide to ensure that annual fundraising and membership goals are met and protocols are understood and followed. Ensure that all volunteers are consistently engaged, empowered and fulfilled in their roles to satisfy HRC’s needs.
Using creativity or taking initiative, consistently evaluate opportunities for engagement as they arise and create new strategies for membership expansion. This includes expansion of HRC’s membership base to diverse constituencies including African American, Latino and transgender communities and straight allies.
Manage the Athletes for Equality program. This includes everything from driving strategy for growth, marketing and growing the scope of and participation in the program, as well as providing direct support to individual athletes and teams.
Serve as community manager for a portfolio of up to 8 communities. Ensure that volunteers have the tools they need to meet their annual fundraising goals via pride and community events. Set achievable goals to guide their work and budget accordingly. Cultivate, train, manage and collaborate with volunteers throughout the year. Depending on the event, may be responsible for anything from talent recruitment and maintenance, creative work on marketing plans and design of sponsorship packages. Coordinate with online strategy team on the creation of emails, online ticket sales modules and social media marketing. Manage all event data to ensure names of attendees and volunteers become part of the HRC database. Insure accurate and timely tracking of all revenue and expense for sound budget oversight.
Manage and develop vendor, partner and national corporate relationships and design mutually beneficial contracts.
Oversee the content of all volunteer trainings and related training materials. Actively participate as a presenter and facilitator at the annual Equality Convention and in trainings throughout the year. Analyze best practices and programmatic outcomes to regularly update content.
Oversee development of membership signage, brochures, community event designs and collateral materials as necessary.
Travel to various prides, community events, athletic events and other HRC functions typically on weekends up to 15x a year. On-the-ground management and coordination with volunteers required on these business trips. Other travel may be assigned as necessary for other membership recruitment or engagement opportunities.
Position Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required with at least five to eight years of program and staff management experience. Strong preference for candidates with volunteer management experience as well as event, membership-building and budget oversight. This role is responsible for managing a dynamic and experienced staff team.
This position regularly collaborates interdepartmentally and externally and must have proven experience with sound decision making, clear judgment and leadership development skills.
The ideal candidate will have proven leadership qualities, be a strategic thinker and have the ability to jump-in. He/she will possess a demonstrated ability and desire to work well under pressure and tight deadlines while handling multiple projects.
The ideal candidate will be motivated by a strong desire to achieve program and professional growth. Strong interpersonal relationship and communication skills are a must. A commitment to LGBT equality is essential. A sense of humor and collaborative spirit is strongly preferred.
