The US Supreme Court has halted same-sex marriage in Utah temporarily.

The Court's decision means that same-sex weddings are now on hold in the heavily Mormon state, while state officials appeal a decision allowing marriage between same-sex couples.

The action happened two weeks after a federal judge in Salt Lake City struck down Utah's ban on gay marriages. In that time over 900 couples have tied the knot.

Supreme Court Justtice Sonia Sotomayor has issued a stay, which effectively halts anymore same-sex marriage unions.
