Resource Center for Sexual & Gender Diversity The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Associate Director is located in the Resource Center for Sexual & Gender Diversity (RCSGD) at UCSB.
The Associate Director serves as a resource for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, questioning and ally members of the University community and helps support the mission and function of the RCSGD. The Associate Director’s main role is providing extensive management to the programming, outreach, and education to the campus community, and oversight of the center, under the general supervision of the Director of LGBT Resources.
The Associate Director must create long-range planning and direction to LGBT services as well as assess effectiveness. The Associate Director creates, leads, implements, and evaluates on-going educational and training initiatives. The Associate Director leads the team of six ten student interns in creating social, educational, and support programs. The Associate Director meets with students and assists them in navigating resources as they resolve emotional, academic, interpersonal, and crisis-level issues related to their identity, perceived identity, or conflict resulting from hate or bias. The Associate Director must assess campus-wide culture and implement systems to address campus climate challenges. The Associate Director must represent LGBT Resources on campus-wide committees, and act for or in the absence of the director. Additional duties include: supporting students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members who access the space and services of the Center; assisting with student organization advisement and referral services; advising the leadership council, supervising student employees; and helping maintain the office’s physical space. The Associate Director will act as Director in their absence.
The Associate Director must display an understanding of key issues LGBTQ students face including alcohol and drug abuse, emotional distress and suicidal ideation, and effects of hate crimes/incidents.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Extensive knowledge of, and experience with, the intersections of LGBTQ issues and other issues addressed by Women, Gender, & Sexual Equity (of which the RCSGD is a part), such as sexual violence, gender equity, and feminist activism.
- Minimum two years full-time experience within higher education, student affairs, or related organizations serving marginalized youth or college-aged students
- Ability to work in a team environment within a collaborative Division of Student Affairs.

Desirable Requirements
- Master’s Degree in education, student development, higher education, gender studies, or related, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Research, create, deliver, and evaluate complex training workshops and programs with measurable learning outcomes specific to diverse audiences of faculty, staff, students, and community members.
- Lead and supervise the team of ten interns in creating social, educational, and support programs.
- Develop and implements educational, social, and cultural programs and events for LGBTQ and ally populations in the university community aimed at enhancing an understanding of diversity and fostering a campus climate that acknowledges and respects the uniqueness of all its members.
- Establishes creative, thought-provoking, and collaborative educational programs addressing the diversity of the LGBTQI community addressing social justice issues and intersections of race, ethnicity, ability, class, religion, gender, etc.
- Perform research and analysis, compile data, and prepare reports for LGBT Resources and the Resource Center for Sexual & Gender Diversity.
- Establishes programming goals and assesses activities to determine effectiveness and student learning outcomes.
- Facilitates LGBT and ally student discussion groups that provide a safe space for peer support.
- Create long-term systems of student identity development through implementing programmatic forums, services, institutes, and retreats.
- Supervise staff members who develop marketing for center activities and resources, including print and internet media.
- Engage in long-range planning, goal setting, policy development, budget decisions and student personnel actions.
Educational Programming
Provide cohesive campus and community educational programming to decrease the incidences of hate crimes, build and provide a safer campus community for the LGBTQI community, respond to the needs of the “highly vulnerable” LGBTQI population.
Management & Supervision
RCSGD Management:
- In absence of Director, serves as the “next in command” to represent the program to the campus community, provide leadership, and offer decision making authority.
- Creates long-range planning goals and objectives for LGBT services and assesses and evaluates campus-wide issues and implement systems to address campus climate challenges.
- Serves as a member of the WGSE Management Team.
- Develops and implements policies and procedures for operations of the Center and program delivery, and manages the office’s physical space in consultation with the director. Uses independent judgment to resolve problem or crisis situations that arise.
- Oversees development and maintenance of the library, including online inventory.
- Serves as the primary resource to provide one-on-one support, crisis management, and appropriate referrals for students in distress.
- Liaison with other departments in the Division and other campus departments and units and maintains on-going cooperative and consultative relations.
- Interact with and support students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members who access the space and services of the Center.
- Develop and manage the LGBT programming budget and outreach to other units for financial support and co-sponsorships for events.
- Supports the functioning of the RCSGD by completing special assignments as required
Student Staff Development:
- Assist with student organization advisement and referral services; advise the leadership council.
- Develop and structure student staff team, and successfully recruit, train, and supervise diverse interns and volunteers.
- Facilitates the creation and maintenance of a positive, student-centered community.
Public Information
- Responsible for the development and distribution of printed materials.
- Assists in the development and maintenance of the Resource Center website.
- Represents the Resource Center and the University to telephone callers, walk-in traffic, and at outreach events.
- Maintains referral files and refers students, faculty, and staff to appropriate campus and community resources.
- Cultivate and sustain ongoing collaborative relationships with a wide array of staff, faculty, students, community members, and with campus and community organizations in order to accomplish goals.
- Collects and disseminates accurate information regarding LGBT issues and resources to the campus and Santa Barbara community.
- Analyze campus-wide policies and procedures and consult with campus partners to create policies and procedures that are inclusive of LGBTQ people.
