Media Matters for America – a progressive, Washington-based, nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media — seeks a researcher to join its Equality Matters initiative. Equality Matters carries out Media Matters ‘ mission with a focus on issues affecting the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. This position is based in our Washington, D.C., office. Applicants must be prepared to relocate if not living within commuting distance of downtown D.C.
Equality Matters Researcher
Responsibilities
Equality Matters researchers have three primary responsibilities:
(1) Media Monitoring – researchers are expected to monitor news outlets in order to identify anti-LGBT attacks and misinformation
(2) Media Analysis – researchers should be capable of analyzing and writing about anti-LGBT attacks in a rapid-response environment. This work will be published almost daily on the Media Matters and Equality Matters websites
(3) Long-Term Research – researchers are expected to develop and execute ideas for long-term research projects that capture trends in the media related to LGBT issues.
Qualifications
At least one year of experience working on LGBT issues or similar progressive causes
Strong Writing Skills:
o Ability to quickly synthesize information about new topics
o Ability to analyze seemingly complex ideas and break them down into easily understood blog posts and fact-checks
o Ability to produce compelling and timely graphics to represent data a plus
Strong Research Skills:
o Familiarity with using tools like Feedly and databases like Lexis Nexis
o Ability to organize and process large amounts of quantitative and qualitative data using programs like Excel
Work Environment:
o Self-starter who can excel both independently and in a team setting
o Ability to multi-task and quickly adapt to new challenges
