North Brooklyn Pride – North Brooklyn PRIDE Fest is the community’s first Pride event, raising awareness for LGBTQ youth in need and celebrating diversity. Williamsburg Brooklyn, NY.
North Brooklyn PRIDE Fest
North Brooklyn, with a population of almost half a million people, has never had a dedicated Pride event before. We want to celebrate our diverse community and raise awareness for LGBTQ youth in need with one really fun, really special event.
Local North Brooklyn businesses have come out in a big way to support this idea. A volunteer event committee was assembled from representatives of the East River Ferry, Saint Vitus, Brooklyn Bowl, The Brooklyn Brewery, The Wythe Hotel, VICE Media, Rough Trade, Broadway Stages, Two Boots, The Water Table, Brooklyn Roasting Company, The Camlin Restaurant & Wine Bar and more, to book our entertainment, food vendors, organize volunteers, make sure we have representatives from local pride community organizations, get the word out, and do community outreach. Not only do we want to celebrate the diversity of our neighbors, our friends, our employees, our community, and our families with a fantastic, long overdue event, but we also want to raise awareness about an issue that doesn’t get a lot of press: The Invisible Youth.
Did you know that up to 50% of the homeless youth who identify as LGBTQ are on the streets because of their sexual orientation or gender identity? Over 40% of LGBTQ youth live in a hostile environment where they’re not accepted…and over 30% of foster youth become homeless within 18 months of aging out of the foster care system?
For our inaugural event, we chose to work with the Heart Gallery NYC, a unique not-for-profit organization that combines the artistic talents of notable photographers with children in need of families and a place to call home. At the event, there will be a unique LGBTQ photo gallery of local kids who need forever families. There will also be information booths about how to become a mentor, a foster parent, and even an adoptive parent. There will also be other information booths available, staffed with representatives from various local LGBTQ organizations.
Join us on Saturday, June 20th at N. 11th Street between Wythe and Kent Avenues in Williamsburg, Brooklyn for the FIRST EVER North Brooklyn Pride Festival.
The celebration will be split into two separate events: from 12:00pm – 3:30pm we’ll have a unique family picnic, with family and kid-friendly entertainment, events, and food. From 4pm – 9pm we’ll have a good ol’ block party with food, music (a killer DJ line-up), and celebrating.
