Lambda Legal is a national organization that works through impact litigation, public education and policy work to achieve full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV. Founded in 1973, Lambda Legal maintains its National Headquarters in New York City and has regional offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta and Dallas.
Lambda Legal’s litigation, policy, and education work encompasses a wide range of areas critically important to LGBT people and those living with HIV, including the freedom to marry; child custody, visitation, adoption, foster care; and sexual orientation, gender identity, and HIV discrimination in employment, schools, youth in out-of-home care systems, health care, the criminal justice system, and other areas. Lambda Legal has been involved in numerous landmark United States and state Supreme Court cases, including Lawrence v. Texas, University of Alabama v. Garrett, In re Marriage Cases, Varnum v. Brien, Benitez v. North Coast Women’s Care Medical Group, and Glenn v. Brumby. Lambda Legal has a docket of 91 cases, 19 of which are in the Southern Region. SUMMARY
Lambda Legal’s Southern Regional Office has primary responsibility for the organization’s litigation and educational work in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. The office includes 3 attorneys, 2 legal assistants, the Director of Community Education, an Office Manager and Administration and Development Assistant. The primary responsibility of the Regional Director, under the guidance of the Education and Public Affairs Department, will be to expand the visibility of the organization throughout the region through outreach and education. The Regional Director is also responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the regional office and ensuring the smooth functioning of the office. Additionally, the Regional Director will play a key role in expanding Lambda Legal’s fundraising operation, including leadership donor cultivation in Atlanta and developing markets in the region under the guidance of the Deputy Development Director. The Regional Director will work closely with volunteers to coordinate education and development efforts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Education and Public Affairs Responsibilities
The Regional Director, under the supervision of the Education and Public Affairs Director, will work closely with the Deputy EPA Director for Education, Advocacy and Inclusion and national and regional EPA staff to develop and implement the annual outreach and education plan and budget for the region. S/he builds and maintains Lambda Legal’s relationships with a diverse range of community groups and leaders as well as local and regional media with the goal of reaching all parts of the community. In conjunction with national and regional legal staff, the RD provides education on LGBT and HIV-related civil rights issues through public speaking and media outreach to community groups and professional organizations.
Administrative Responsibilities
Under the supervision of Lambda Legal’s Deputy Director, the RD oversees the administrative functioning of regional office operations, including hiring, training, supervising and evaluating the Office Manage and Administration/Development Assistant and is responsible for administrative matters for the regional office. The RD works with the Deputy Director and CFO on developing and monitoring the regional administrative budget.
Fundraising Responsibilities
The Regional Director, under the mentorship of the Deputy Development Director and with input from national and regional staff, will design and implement the annual fundraising plan for Atlanta and for other emerging markets in the region. S/he will work closely with Board members, National Leadership Council members and other local volunteers to coordinate development efforts and involvement, and may over time develop volunteer presence in other emerging markets. S/he assists the Deputy Development Director and national and regional staff in implementing the annual leadership donor fundraising plan, which includes building and maintaining relationships with donors, soliciting specific major gifts, and identifying potential new donors for cultivation and solicitation. The Regional Director is expected to take a leading role in developing Lambda Legal’s leadership donor base in Atlanta and developing emerging markets in the region.
The RD works in coordination with the Development Department to identify potential regional foundation funders and serves, as needed, as liaison to these funders. S/he works in coordination with the Development Department to identify, cultivate and solicit targeted law firm and corporate sponsors and serves, as needed, as liaison to these sponsors.
The Regional Director works with the Deputy Development Director and other Development staff to create and implement the Atlanta and developing markets budget and work plan.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Southern Regional Director has primary supervision of the Office Manager and Administration/Development Assistant, as well as administrative supervision of the entire regional office. The Southern Regional office has staff who are members of the Legal, Education & Public Affairs and Administration and Finance departments and will work with those Department Directors and/or Deputy Directors on administrative matters concerning their department members in the regional office.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in community education and coalition-building within a movement for social change, managing staff and volunteers and knowledge of LGBT communities in the region is required, as is a demonstrated commitment to the civil rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender people and those living with HIV. The successful candidate must have a commitment to being a team player with others within the office and across the organization, yet be able to work in an autonomous environment and be self-directed and self-motivated. S/ he will be someone who has a “big picture” view for the LGBT movement and the organization’s needs, who can also “roll up their sleeves” and manage details with acumen. A candidate must have outstanding written and oral communication skills as well as demonstrate a firm commitment to multiculturalism. Significant travel throughout the region and periodic travel to Headquarters is required for this position. Knowledge and experience in donor software (preferably Raiser’s Edge) is desirable.
