The American TV Cable company TLC has created a great deal of controversy with a new programme which features four Mormon women who are declaring that the men they married are not gay, and that they simply have same sex attraction (which they refer to as SSA).
One of the man explained that his attraction to other men is just like the equivalent of eating “Too many donuts.” He elaborated that he doesn’t think of having sex with a man when he’s having sex with his wife but he ended his statement saying that he would “love to eat donuts every day,” However he desires to live a healthy lifestyle (!) and that he’s not miserable or denying himself because he truly loves his wife and believes that his relationship with her is “healthy.”
Change.org organized a petition that attracted 100000 signatures asking TLC not to air the show, which they called offensive, but it only resulted in gaining more attention for this otherwise innocuous programme. It may be funny watching this clip of the closeted Mormon compare being gay to eating a sticky pastry, but it’s sad that their wives think by not mentioning the ‘g’ word this makes them straight.
As the LGBTQI community continues to explore definitions of both gender and sexuality, it should embrace gay men who choose for whatever reason to be celibate, but in this instance though here is a group of men living in total denial of who they really are which is a totally different scenario, and in the end that is no laughing matter.
