More and more people are announcing they’re boycotting Russian vodka. The latest is celebrity columnist Dan Savage, who posted a well-thought-out explanation as to why.
June 30, Vladamir Putin signed into law a bill that allows Russian police to arrest anyone who is gay. This includes gay travelers. In fact, just a few days ago, Russian police arrested four dutch tourists under the new law.
Also, two weeks ago, a group of anti-gay protestors in Russia attacked a group protesting the new law. It turned violent. Several people were injured and many were arrested.
Gay rights advocates are taking notice and calling for boycotts. One group is asking athletes to boycott the Winter Olympics, which will take place in Sochi this year. Another is calling for a boycott of vodka. The two biggest brands of Russian vodka in the US are Russian Standard and Stolichnaya.
Some gay bars in Chicago have already stopped serving Russian vodka. Savage is calling on Seattle’s gay bars to do the same.
No word yet if any Dallas bars are participating.
