Theatre Review: Limbo, London Wonderground at The Southbank
by Chris Bridges | 1st August 2013
★★★★★
It’s not often that I’m left speechless but Limbo left me open mouthed and gasping. Described as the biggest party between heaven and hell this riotous and dark performance is set in the fantastic retro setting of the mirrored wooden Spiegeltent in the atmospheric Wonderground. There’s an amazing line up of cabaret, circus and sideshow running right through till autumn at the Southbank.
Contortionism, tap dancing, fire eating, sword swallowing, acrobatics and striptease are all performed in ways that you’ve never seen them done before. The men are hot and muscular and the air crackles with tension as the performers dazzle to a live soundtrack that defies genre. My senses were totally overloaded and I sat agog like a small child but with a healthy tickle of apprehension in my belly.
Apparently the show is also not just good enough for queens like me but has also entertained the queen of pop herself, Ms Madonna Ciccone, who was spotted and papped in the audience last night.
I can’t recommend this show highly enough. See it until the 29th of September or sample some of the other delights of the Wonderground.
